Bhubaneswar: As many as 8,205 people in six districts of Odisha have been affected by rain triggered by a deep depression system that crossed the coast near Kalingapatnam, Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari said Thursday.
“The weather system has af fected as many as 8,205 people in 37 blocks, 127 gram panchayats and five urban local bodies (ULBs) across the districts of Koraput, Ganjam, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Nabarangpur and Rayagada,” Pujari said while addressing the media.
He said the state government was closely monitoring the situation and that district administrations and field-level response teams had been kept on alert. Pujari said there had been no widespread reports of major damage so far, while assessment and restoration work continued in the affected areas.
The deep depression over north coastal Andhra Pradesh crossed the coast between 11 pm September 23 and 1 am September 24 near an area southwest of Kalingapatnam. It had sustained winds of 55-65 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 75 kmph. The system triggered significant rainfall in several parts of Odisha Thursday.
