Odisha woman injured after lover, family allegedly assault her over marriage demand

Jajpur: A 24-year-old woman suffered serious injuries after her 27-year-old lover and his family members beat her up for pressing for marriage in Odisha’s Jajpur district, police said on Sunday.

The accused, identified as Samir Sahu, has been arrested over the incident that took place in Mirzapur village in Dharmasala police station area on Saturday night.

Sahu and the woman, a resident of nearby Dubagadia village, were in a romantic relationship for the last five years. Sahu allegedly had physical relationship with her by promising her marriage. However, when she recently pressed him for marriage, the accused refused to marry her, a police officer said.

The CHC authorities informed the police, and she was shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.

Her condition is stable now, hospital sources said.

Based on a complaint filed by the victim’s family, police arrested the accused on Sunday after registering a case under sections of BNS.

Police are looking for other members of the accused’s family involved in the attack on the victim.

We have arrested the main accused, and a manhunt has been launched to nab the others involved in the incident. They have fled the village. Further investigation is underway, Dharmasala police station inspector-in-charge Chinmayee Sahu said.
