Odisha: Woman rescued, husband missing after couple swept away in River

Jajpur: An elderly woman was rescued while her husband remained missing after the couple was allegedly swept away while taking a bath in the Genguti river in Odisha’s Jajpur district early Monday, police said.

The incident took place at Balikuda ghat in the district, they said.

The couple, identified as Sudhakar Ojha (64) and his wife Sulochana (60), residents of Balikuda village within Balichandrapur police station limits, had gone to take a bath in the river in the early hours when they were swept away, police said.

The incident came to light after some locals bathing nearby alerted the fire services personnel.

A team of fire services personnel from Bari reached the spot and launched a search and rescue operation in the river.

During the operation, Sulochana was traced and rescued from Mahakal Pada area under Bari block, more than 14 km from the spot.

She was admitted to Indupur Community Health Centre for treatment.

However, Sudhakar could not be traced despite efforts by the rescue team.

Fire Services personnel continued their search operation in the river till evening to locate him, police said.
