Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s first vehicle scrapping facility would be ready in Khurda district soon, a source in the Commerce and Transport department said Wednesday.

According to the source, Empreo Premium, which has almost finished all the requirements to establish its registered vehicle scrapping facility (RVSF) in Khurda’s Pitapalli will likely scrap 642 government vehicles in the first phase.

The facility is being developed on a property that Empreo Premium has purchased. Vehicles registered in Odisha or any other state — the data for which is available on the VAHAN portal — may be scrapped at the Empreo Premium facility once it is up and running.

The new facility will also help the government’s efforts to formalise the state’s current informal and unorganised auto recycling industry.

It is worth mentioning that another applicant has contacted the Commerce and Transport department to establish an RVSF in Jajpur district.

The minimum amount of land needed for a two or three-wheeler scrapping yard should be one acre, as stated in the Odisha Motor Vehicles (Registration and Functions of Vehicle Scrapping Facility) Policy, 2022, which was announced November 30 last year. It should be at least two acres in size for light, medium, and heavy motor vehicles.

Notably, to decrease air pollution, the Center has advised the state government to scrap more than 18 lakh vehicles that are over 15 years old and do not have fitness certificates.
