Odissi Nrutya Mahotsav begins

Bhubaneswar: The eighth edition of Odissi Nrutya Sangeet Samman Mahotsav being organised by Nrutyangana was inaugurated at Rabindra Mandap here, Sunday.
The Mahotsav began with mardal performance by the mardal player Ramachandra Behera and his group. Fourteen artistes presented ‘Talabadya’ with perfect rhythm. The presentation was hugely appreciated by the audience.
Bharatanatyam dancer from Hyderabad Kiranmayee grabbed the attention of the audience with two of her spellbinding dances. Her first presentation narrated the beauty of Lord Rama while her other creation depicted childhood activities of Lord Krishna. Speaking to
Orissa POST, Kiranmayee said, “My first presentation priorities various mudras and expressions, while second pieces is all about Abhinaya. Both performances are based on Carnatic music.”
Thirty-minute long presentations were set to raga Kadanakuthoohalam and Yamunakalyani raga respectively.
Young dancers from West Bengal also enthralled the audience with their recitals. They performed dance holding lamps in their hands, while they danced on a pot and a thali.
In addition, young dancers featured Mohiniattam, Durga stuti and Jayadeva’s Ashtapadi.
Two artistes presented Jayadeva’s Ashtapadi depicting divine love between Radha and Krishna.
Harsita, a dancer said, “Ashtapadi is creative dance which is very attractive. The typical outfit for the dance is also fascinating.”
Mohiniattam, presented by eight young dancers of West Bengal received hearty applause from the audience.
Nrutyangana secretary Guru Subash Chandra Swain said, “We wanted to showcase different classical dance forms on a single platform. This Mahotsav has brought various dance forms under one roof.”
The eighth edition of Odissi Nrutya Sangeet Samman will be given to vocalist Dr Sangeeta Gosain. Sangeeta is a veteran in the field of research and practices Odissi vocal. She is well known for her rendering of traditional Oriya ‘Chhanda’ and ‘Champu’ and several other devotional songs.
Currently she is the Chief Executive Officer of Guru Kelu Charana Mohapatra Odissi Research Center.
Prior to this Gosain was serving as a senior faculty at Utkal University of Culture, Bhubaneswar.
