OHRC moved over assault on patient

Puri: A complaint has been filed with the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) in connection with the physical assault on an eight-year-old patient at the district headquarters hospital here March 30.

Petitioner Prasanna Kumar Dash urged the rights body to launch an impartial probe into the incident.

As per the complaint, Jayram Mansingh of Mishra Sahi in the city here had been admitted to the DHH with certain health complications March 30. Jayram was taken to the surgery ward OT for a minor operation.

However, on-duty doctor PK Jena suddenly lost his temper over some issues inside the OT and beat Jayram. The minor boy sustained several bruises on her face.

Victim’s family members protested the incident soon after they came to know about it. However, the doctor concerned rejected their allegation and fled the spot.

Subsequently, Jayram’s father Arjun lodged separate complaints in this regard with Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Ramchandra Rout and Kumbharpada police.

The petitioner urged the OHRC to take necessary steps to provide Rs 2 lakh compensation to the victim’s family. “The doctor concerned must be asked to pay for the compensation. Stern action should be taken against him,” the petition said.

The petitioner also requested the rights body to direct the CDMO to devise a system which would check similar incident in future.
