On his return journey from Prayag, youth falls from train, crushed to death

Rishida: A thirty two-year-old youth was crushed under the wheels of a moving train as his feet slipped while attempting to re-board it at a station in Raipur Friday. He was on his way back home with his family members after immersing his father’s remains at Prayag in Allahabad.

The deceased was Sitaram Barik (32) of Jharmunda village of Sadar panchayat in Karlamunda block of Kalahandi district.

Sitaram had lost his father when he was a child. Though he grew up and married, he had a desire to take his father’s mortal remains to Prayag, believing it to be a filial duty. Some days ago, he along with his wife and uncle went to Prayag and performed the ritual.

Two days back, they boarded a train for their return journey. At a station near Raipur, the train halted at about 8 pm. Sitaram got down to fetch water. When he was heading back to the train, it started rolling.

Barik started running, with one hand holding the water bottle. In his attempt to get into the running train, he fell down. The train was brought to a halt.

Railway officials said the wheels rolled over Barik’s waist, causing his death. The family members were dumb founded seeing the incident before their eyes.

The railway police handed over the body to the family after post-mortem.

The family members were expected to reach Jharmunda by Sunday evening. A pall of gloom descended on the village.
