One body and its two claimants put police in fix

Parjang: With two families claiming their rights on a body fished out from Brahmani river under Bhuban police limits in Dhenkanal district Friday, a dispute has emerged, making the police’s job even more difficult.

According to police sources, some villagers had spotted a dead body floating in Brahmani river near Odhana-Malapur village. On being informed, police and fire fighting personnel had reached the spot and in the presence of tehsildar Shaktikanta Ray, fished out the bloated body.

As the news spread, family members of Sushant, who had been missing since the Kundandeipur boat mishap under Parjang police limits, reached the spot and identified the body as that of him.

After registering an unnatural death case (Case No-20/19), police seized the body and sent to Bhuban community health centre (CHC) for post-mortem.

The case what initially seemed to be simple has turned out to be a critical one with another claimant of the body appearing at the scene.

Karunakar Mallick, a resident of Duigodiasahi had drowned in Ramial river, a distributary of the Brahmani river Saturday. Hearing of a dead body having been fished out, Karunakar’s relatives reached Bhuban CHC, claiming the body as that of Karunakar’s.

When contacted, the tehsildar said that after recovery of the body, block chairman and Sushant’s family members had come and identified the it. Meanwhile, another family is claiming over the body. Police investigation would confirm whether the body is of Sushant or Karunakar. Sub divisional police officer (SDPO) Suprasanna Mallick and investigating officer Tusharkanti Nayak have the same thing to say.

However, the police have said that the body would be handed over to the family who comes with proof to establish its claim. The post-mortem would be carried out Saturday.
