Bhubaneswar, Sept 21: Citizens will soon have a dedicated mechanism to register their grievances online with the help of the online compliant registry system, ADG State Crimes Records Bureau B Radhika said Monday.
Radhika was speaking at a workshop organised on the premises of Kalinga Institute of Industrial Training (KIIT) on women’s safety at the workplace as well as at educational institutions.
“Many victims of sexual violence and crimes often find it difficult to reach out to the police. Only in extreme situations many people opt to reach the police station. An online system for citizens to file their complaints is most likely to go live from December this year.
Radhika also requested women to enquire about the available legislations ensuring their safety and welfare. Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Commissioner of Police RP Sharma who was also a part of the discussion expressed concern over the rise in crimes against women and pressed for gender sensitisation of men.
“According to crime records, Orissa witnessed a total of 592 cases of crimes against women and 72 cases of rapes. Cases relating to sexual harassment at the workplace are a matter of concern. I firmly believe that gender sensitisation of males is the need of the hour if crimes against women are to be checked,” Sharma said.
Sashipriva Bandini, State Information Commissioner, said, “There are many laws to safeguard the interests of women and citizens but it is really a matter of concern that the stakeholders are often ignorant of such laws. People need to know such legislations and provisions well to tackle any kind of situation.”
Sucheta Priyabadini, director of student affairs and convener of the grievance redressal forum for women of the university, said, “Unlike earlier girls are now successfully venturing into different facets of professional life. They have changed the socio-cultural dynamics. However, cases of harassment at workplaces are really worrisome. To tackle such crimes KIIT has a forum and we are planning to launch an online platform soon.”
