Online registration of vehicles from June 1

Cuttack: Come June 1, people of the district will have the opportunity to register their vehicles online with the regional transport office (RTO) here.
Sources said the Centre has developed a software, Bahan-4, for online registration of vehicles at RTOs. Currently, online registration of motor vehicles is being accomplished at 325 RTOs in 14 states.
“Cuttack RTO has been chosen as a pilot project for online registration of vehicles in the state,” said regional transport officer Dipti Ranjan Patra.
According to Patra, Bahan-4 will also help in online collection of road tax and transfer of vehicle ownerships. Moreover, the software will make the process of fitness checking less time consuming. “The new system will reduce long queues at RTOs. People will have the opportunity to choose the timing for physical verification and vehicle fitness checking,” Patra said.
According to sources, the new system will enable vehicle owners to know the status of their online applications. “RTOs can store details of vehicles, starting from their manufacturing to sales, by using the new software. The new system will assist us to deal with stolen vehicles and other irregularities,” Patra claimed.
Sources said experts from the National Informatics Centre have been working in the city RTO for the last 15 days to install the new system. “The online registration system will be introduced at other RTOs of the state in a phased manner,” said Patra.
