Orissa annihilate Assam

Bhubaneswar: Rajesh Dhuper (70 n o, 83b, 9×4, 1×6) and skipper Govind Poddar (50 n o, 46b, 6×4, 1×6) struck unbeaten half centuries to steer Orissa to a comfortable nine-wicket victory against Assam in a Group A Vijay Hazare trophy match at Bangalore, Sunday.

Chasing 137 runs for victory, Dhuper and Poddar took just 25.4 overs to romp home losing the only wicket of Anurag Sarangi (13) in the process. Orissa now stand fourth in the group table with eight points from three matches behind Punjab and Railways who too have the same number of points with a better run rate. Karnataka top the group with 10 points from four matches.

Earlier put into bat, Assam had the worst of the starts as they were reduced to 12/3 in 11.4 overs. Romario Sharma (49, 60b, 4×4, 1×6) tried his best to resurrect the innings but failed to do so as Assam were bowled out for a paltry 136 in 46.1 overs.

Abhishek Raut (2/33) and Suryakant Pardhan (2/14) were the most successful among the Orissa bowlers.

Brief scores: Assam 136 (Romaria Sharma 49; Suryakant Pradhan 2/14) lost to Orissa 137/1 (Rajesh Dhuper 70 n o, Govind Poddar 50 n o) by nine wickets.
