Orissa eves emerge champs

 

Bhubaneswar: Orissa women’s team emerged champions in the recently concluded National Junior Powerlifting Championships at Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.

Devi Singh was adjudged Strong Woman in the competition. She lifted a total of 347.5 kg in the 42 kg category to clinch the gold medal. Simarani Singh, Laxmi Singh and Priyadarshini Bisoi lifted totals of 227.5kg, 287.5kg and 392.5 kg in the 43kg, 47kg and 72kg categories respectively to clinch yellow metals.

Bharati Patra and Rupali Palei bagged bronze medals in the 43kg and 47kg categories after lifting totals of 207.5kg and 277.5kg.

Sambalpur clinch title

Sambalpur emerged champions of the East Zone Inter-University Women’s Hockey Championships, which concluded at the Biju Patnaik Hockey Stadium at Rourkela, Sunday.

Ranchi had to be satisfied with the runners-up finish. After the end of all the league matches both Sambalpur and Ranchi were tied with seven points each. But on the basis of the goal differences Sambalpur were declared the champions. Zonepur and Mizoram finished third and fourth respectively.

Chess tourney

Manas Ranjan Parida clinched the title of the Bhubaneswar Open Chess Championship, which concluded here Sunday.

Manas took the top honours with a total of 8.5 points from nine rounds. Prabhat Kumar Ojha finished runner-up with eight points. Sarbeswar Sahoo finishd third with seven points.

Other prizes: (U-7) Jagat Jasim Patra, (U-9) N Pratyush, (U-11) Saswat Sahoo, (U-13) K Anurag (Girls’) S Dipti), (Best woman) Snehanjali Pradhan, (Best veteran) Bhimsen Pradhan.
