Bhubaneswar, Sept 7: Orissa men’s and women’s teams emerged champions in the recently-concluded IVth All India Open Gateball Championship in Madhya Pradesh.
Orissa men defeated Chandigarh 16-12, while the women thrashed hosts Madhya Pradesh 20-7 in the finals to clinch the titles.
Squirrels make merry
Purple Squirrels (PS) prevailed over Blue Hawks (BH) 3-0 in a match of the Orissa Snooker Premier League at the Vintage Club here Wednesday.
Jiten Sarangi of PS defeated Subhranshu Kar of BH 2-0 (65-17, 73-35), while Subrat Das of PS triumphed over Satyadeep Das of BH by an identical margin (81-10, 55-32). In another match Kunal Agarwal of the winning team edged out Siddharth Sen of BH 2-1 (63-72, 57-23, 58-51). Kunal was adjudged man of the match.
Baize Rulers (BR) scraped past Rising Kings (RK) 3-2. Ashwini Patnaik of BR defeated Rumit Gupta 2-1 (56-36, 38-66, 57-25). However, Ashutosh Padhy restored parity for RK with a 2-0 (112 (84)-08, 69-14) over Amiya Nayak. But Jeet Kishore Das of BR prevailed over Anuj Panda 2-0 (72-22, 75-34) to again get the lead for the Rulers. But RK came back into the match again with Akash Mohapatra beating Rakesh Pradhan 2-1 (54-25, 57-60, 65-6). But then BR had the last laugh as Chirag Arora got the better of Khalid Sultan 2-0 (57-36, 41-28).
The highest break of 84 on the day was recorded by Ashutosh.

Players selected
The Orissa junior team consisting of 86 athletes (48 boys and 38 girls) were selected Wednesday for the 28th East Zone Junior Athletic Championships at Guwahati, September 10-11. The players left from Cuttack, Wednesday.
