Oriya magician set to make Europeans drop their jaws

Cuttack: A young magician from the city is all set to visit several countries of the European Union (EU) to not only entertain people there, but also teach them magic tricks.
Sources said magician Hemanta Kumar Sahu of CDA Sector-10 would visit countries like Italy, Vatican City, Switzerland and France between March 17 and March 27 to demonstrate his skills. Orissa-based NGO Jeevan Rekha Parishad (JRP) and the European Commission will jointly organise Sahu’s magic shows.
Sahu will be the first Oriya magician to teach magic tricks to the people of Europe.
“I will teach magic tricks to the youngsters of several European countries. Magic can inculcate scientific temper in students and entertain them,” Sahu said.
The young magician has supported introduction of magic in school and college curricula across the globe to make the education system more attractive.
“Regular magic shows in schools and colleges can take away students’ mental stress. Moreover, the traditional art can help in reducing dropout rates. Magic can boost the information technology sector,” Sahu argued.
Magic was in Sahu’s blood as his father Harekrushna had some expertise in the traditional art. “I have learnt tricks of magic from my father. I have been associated with the trade since my schooldays. Many government and non-government organisations have sought my services to create awareness among people on various issues,” said the young magician.
Sahu has made elaborate plans to entertain European people. He has planned some special tricks like keeping a person suspended in air and stopping somebody’s wristwatch.
“Performing magic shows in front of Eurpean people is a big challenge for me. I will entertain them by installing an Indian flag on the stage out of thin air. Also, I can change the location, size and colour of an object through my tricks,” Sahu said.
The homegrown magician has an ambition to popularise magic among the people of Orissa. “People of West Bengal and Kerala have much interest in magic. I have planned to open a school to nurture good magicians and popularise the traditional art,” the magician added.
