Ostracised even in death, body in open for 12 hours

Komna: In a shocking incident, a body was dumped for more than 12 hours after locals refused to perform the last rites following communal tension at Kandetara under Komna block in Nuapada district Tuesday.

Almost 35 years ago, a Hindu girl Gadubai Satnami of Kandetara village fell in love with a Muslim boy Md Oshi of Delhi and the two tied the knot. Since then, the couple was ostracised by both the communities.
Shockingly, even after the man’s death after 35 years members of both the communities refused to touch the body and perform the last rites. The body lay on a village road for more than 12 hours.

Satnami was a labourer in Mumbai in 1982 where she married Oshi. The couple returned and settled near her village.

Enraged over their marriage, both Hindus and Muslims of the village ostracised them. The couple was also childless. Gadubai was suffering from asthma for the last one year. Oshi admitted her to the district headquarters hospital after her health deteriorated Monday but doctors referred her to Burla-based VIMSAR. However, due to financial constraints, Oshi brought her back to the village where she died Monday night.

While some relatives came to see her but no one dared to touch the body. Finally, after 12 hours some youths took the body to a graveyard and buried it. PNN
