Paa to Piku: Amitabh Bachchan’s best performances in unconventional roles

The Shehenshah of Hindi cinema Amitabh Bachchan’s versatility is legendary. From personifying the angry-young-man character in his initial days in the film industry to slaying the cute, romantic hero, Amitabh has played a plethora of characters over the years.

The Dadasaheb Phalke Award winner also has a penchant for playing out-of-the-box and unconventional roles. Here are five films in which Big B has tried something entirely new:

Black

The movie Black features Amitabh as Debraj Sahai who is as an alcoholic teacher to a blind, a deaf and mute girl suffering from Alzheimer’s. Amitabh himself admitted that playing Debraj was one of the most difficult tasks of his life. The actor won his second National Award for the portrayal.

Paa

In this film Amitabh plays a 12-year-old kid who suffers from a rare genetic disorder called progeria. Starring alongside son Abhishek Bachchan and Vidya Balan, Amitabh’s superb acting saw him win his 3rd National Film Award and his 5th Filmfare Best Actor Award.

Pink

Amitabh plays the role of a retired lawyer who decides to fight a sexual harassment and molestation case on behalf of three girls facing an uphill battle against politically-connected men.

 

Piku

Amitabh’s character in Piku suffers from chronic constipation. Starring Deepika Padukone as Amitabh’s daughter, Piku received widespread acclaim and handed Big B his fourth National Award for Best Actor.

 

Sarkar

The Sarkar series by famed director Ram Gopal Varma won everyone’s hearts for bringing Amitabh’s darkest side on screen. Essaying the character Subhash Nagre, who is referred to as Sarkar, Amitabh’s mannerisms and dialogues made Sarkar a blockbuster hit.
