Puri: Recent spells of unseasonal rain have adversely affected paddy crops in many places of the district here. For paddy cultivators who had faced a drought-like situation due low monsoon rain, the unseasonal rain was a double whammy.
According to sources, standing paddy crops in Deipur, Badala, Divyasinghpur, Gada Badaput, Gada Sanaput, Trilochanpur and Sirei panchayats of Kanas block have been destroyed by the recent rain.
Similarly, paddy fields in Ganeshpur, Pallichhak, Nayahaat, Bidarpur, Rahanga, Payara and Gorada areas of Gop block witnessed water logging due to the rain. “Paddy cultivation was severely affected by this year’s low monsoon rain. The recent unseasonal rain has given a deathblow to paddy cultivators,” said Sukanta Nayak, an affected farmer of Gop.
Sources said paddy crops in many panchayats of Kakatpur, Delang and Sadar blocks have been badly affected by the rain. “Many farmers in the district started cutting paddy crops a few days ago. But, they could not get enough time to carry the crops to safe places. Now, the sudden has destroyed much of the crops,” said Gangadhar Pradhan, an affected farmer of Sadar block.
“The recent rain, however, will prove very helpful for rabi crops. We have directed our field-level officials to assess the damage to paddy crops caused by the rain,” said an official of the district
administration.
