Cuttack: The Jagannath culture is as old as Babylonian or Mesopotamian civilisation but little has been done for its promotion, says Justice Bimal Prasad Das Commission in its second report to the state government.
The judicial panel, constituted to suggest reform measures for Puri Srimandir, has recommended the introduction of Jagannath culture and the legends associated with Srimandir in the state’s Class-IX and Class-X curricula.
“Introduction of Jagannath culture in high school curricula will enable the students to know about Srimandir and Lord Jagannath at an early age,” said a source associated with the judicial panel.
It is learnt that the Justice Das Commission has suggested to the government to introduce a scholarship on Jagannath culture and Srimandir. “A scholarship for students will entice them to learn more about the Lord,” claimed Justice Das.
The panel has advised the government to set up a museum in Puri to spread awareness among tourists on Srimandir and other shrines in the holy city. “The state government can display photos and details of Srimandir and other shrines in Puri at one place.
People who are not allowed to enter the Srimandir can visit the place and get details on the temples, said Justice Das. Besides, the commission has advised the government to arrange photos and details of mutts in Puri and provide adequate information on rituals of Srimandir at the museum.
According to sources, the panel has suggested the construction of a Jagannath temple each in the three revenue divisions of the state and engage some senior officials to manage the proposed shrines.
“The proposed shrines should adhere to the customs and traditions of Puri Srimandir. Besides, the second report has put emphasis on proper preservation and management of land properties of Lord Jagannath,” said the source.
Sources said the judicial panel is thinking of asking the state government for an extension of its tenure. “We will soon start preparing our third report on Srimandir. The report will deal with issues related to proper management of Srimandir,” said Justice Das.
The judicial panel submitted its second interim report to the state government December 7 while it had submitted its first interim report to the government April 20 this year.
