Parjang: A tusker attack left three people critically injured while they were collecting mahua flowers in villages under the Dhenkanal forest division Sunday morning, triggering panic in the area.
The injured have been identified as Debaraj Sahu, 70, of Khaira Sahi in Kantor village; Sabitri Sahu, 50, of Chandikatela Sahi in Kantor; and Aditya Sahu, 37, of Barihapur. Debaraj was gathering mahua flowers near his farmland when a tusker suddenly attacked, lifting him with its trunk and smashing him on the ground.
He sustained severe chest injuries. In a separate incident, Sabitri was attacked by the same elephant, suffering injuries to her waist and thighs.
Aditya also came under attack while collecting mahua flowers in Barihapur village and is reported to be in a critical condition.
All three were initially admitted to the Parjang Community Health Centre. Due to the seriousness of their condition, they were later shifted to the district headquarters hospital for advanced treatment.
Forest officials, including Dihadol forester Chandra Sekhar Behera, reached the hospital to assess the victims’ condition and extend assistance.
Meanwhile, a Forest department elephant squad is tracking the tusker and keeping a close watch on its movement.
The elephant reportedly moved rapidly between Chandikatela, Khaira Sahi and Barihapur, attacking people at multiple locations.
The incident has sparked fear among residents in the affected villages, particularly as the mahua collection season is underway.
Forest officials have urged locals to remain alert and avoid venturing into forested areas alone.
