Patient’s death triggers tension at Balasore DHH

Balasore: Tension erupted at Balasore district headquarters hospital Sunday following the death of a patient after he was allegedly administered with wrong injection Saturday night.

After lodging a police complaint, the family members barged into the hospital and vandalised the casualty ward.

The family members alleged that the death was allegedly due to the negligence of duty doctor Priya Kumar Ghosh and nurses. Few minutes after the person was administered the wrong injection he died, they said.

The deceased identified as Madhusudan Pradhan (45) of Sanadahapara area near Sahadebkhunta complained of chest pain at  8 pm following which he was  taken to the hospital.

Based on the doctor’s prescription, he was first given an injection at the casualty ward.
Later, when his condition got worsened, they shifted him to the hospital’s medicine ward. However, when Madhusudan reached the medicine ward, doctors declared him dead.

On the other hand, it was alleged that the injection given to Madhusudan was prescribed to another cardiovascular patient.

Even as the family members realised that Madhusudan was administered with wrong injection and informed a nurse, she consulted a doctor. However, before they could infuse the antidose, Madhusudan died.

Chief District Medical Officer Bibekananda Das said the exact cause of the death could only be ascertained after the post-mortem report.

While a case has been lodged by the bereaved family against alleged medical negligence, another complaint was lodged with police in connection with ransacking of the casualty ward, said Das.
