Sambalpur: A postgraduate student of Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Burla allegedly attempted suicide and is currently undergoing treatment in the ICU, officials said.

The student, a first-year PG in the paediatrics department, reportedly consumed sedative tablets. Her condition is stated to be stable.

Sources said she was under mental stress due to emergency duties and workload. There are also allegations that she faced mental harassment from the head of the department, though this has not been officially confirmed.

VIMSAR superintendent and in-charge director Dr Lal Mohan Nayak said the student would be questioned after her recovery. “Appropriate action will be taken based on the findings,” he said.

The student had joined the department around a month ago. Her husband is also a doctor and is pursuing postgraduate studies in neurosurgery at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.
