PET teacher held for raping student

Kendrapara: The Tantiapala police and their Rajnagar counterparts Tuesday arrested the accused Physical Education (PE) Teacher of the Tarapada-based Kunja Behari Uchha Bidyabhavan school from the Rajnagar BEO office for allegedly raping a Class 10 girl of the school on October 26, IIC Manoranjan Choudhury of Mahakalapada Police Station who is also the in-charge of Tantiapala Marine Police Station said.

Choudhury said the arrested Physical Education Teacher, Bidyapati Jena, is ill and has been admitted to the District Headquarters Hospital.

Jena would be presented in court after he is discharged from the hospital, the IIC said.

The father of the minor survivor had lodged an FIR at the Tantiapala Marine Police Station November 8 alleging that his 15-year-old daughter was raped by PE Teacher Bidyapati Jena on October 26 near Milanmoda as his daughter was returning with the Teacher on his bike after participating in the Suravi programme held at Binapani High School.

He said Jena proposed marriage to his daughter near Milanmoda, kissed her on the road and raped his daughter later. Jena also threatened to kill the survivor by throwing acid on her if she disclosed the rape to anybody, the complaint said.

The girl’s father later met the Headmaster of the school and told him what happened. He said Headmaster Kailash Chandra Rout told him that he would look into the matter and then handed over Rs 1 lakh to him, and asked him to suppress the matter.

He said the Headmaster also told him not to lodge an FIR against the PE Teacher. The father of the girl said that when he refused the offer and returned the money, the HM threatened to kill him.

Tantiapala Marine Police registered a case (No: 32/2018) under Section 376 (II)(n), 506, 341, 354 and 354 (a) of IPC and the Pocso Act against Bidyapati Jena, IIC Choudhury said.

District Education Officer Kalpana Behera suspended Jena on November 8 for allegedly raping the student as per the inquiry report of Mahakalapada BEO.
