Keonjhar: Daragadishila, near River Baitarani, in Kolimati panchayat under Anandapur block is a picturesque place in Keonjhar district. It has all the hallmarks of a tourist site capable of attracting visitors in large numbers. But the state government has not taken any steps to tag it as a tourist site.
Those visiting the spot go gaga over its scenic beauty and favour the idea of developing it as a tourist spot. Nevertheless, a large number of local people picnic at the site.
Baitarani meandering its way through hilly terrains and forested areas is a sight to behold for visitors and nature lovers. Besides, an expansive lake is visible from atop the hills.
The river takes its bending course at Bhimkunda and runs for 10 km. The gurgling sound of waters amid the sylvan surroundings is only disturbed by the cacophony of birds. The place has immense scope for water sports like boating and river rafting. Locals and nature lovers have proposed a cable ropeway with hanging cars across the river to enjoy the enchanting beauty.
The place is expected to gain importance with a dam and a hydropower project that are under construction. Many nature lovers liken the place to Ganga gorges around Rishikesh in Uttarakhand.
Daragadishila is 60 km away from the district headquarters town and 15 km away from National Highway-20. Development of necessary infrastructure like a motorable road to the site and its promotion will help it emerge as a tourist place. Accommodation facility in the nearby areas will add an advantage to the site.
Nature lovers and locals assert that development of tourism at this place will lead to development of tribals living in peripheral areas. Poor tribals will have an opportunity to earn from their skills if tourism is developed. As the place is just 30 km away from the famous Tarini Temple in Ghatagaon, tourists coming there may be eager to visit Daragadishila to have great experience in the lap of nature. PNN
