Plus II student electrocuted in brick kiln

Belpahar, March 17: Pyara Santosh Gudiya (17), a Plus II student of Belpahar College from Kudaloi village who was working in Shriya Brick Factory, a kiln in Ganjamunda under the local police limits in Jharsuguda district as a labourer, Tuesday died of electrocution on the factory premises.
Two other labourers of the kiln also sustained critical injuries in the incident. They were Puja Bhainsal (22) and Ranjit Kerketa (17).
Pyara has just appeared the Plus II examination. However, the boy went to work in the brick kiln to add to the income of his family due to financial constraints and to support his studies, village sarpanch Binod Bihari Majhi said. With adequate security arrangement in the factory, the mishap could have been averted, Majhi added and demanded compensation for the bereaved family. Deceased’s mother Shilvanti lost consciousness after learning about her son’s death. Locals rushed her to a nearby hospital.
Reports said, more than 10 labourers, including these three, were working in the factory in the morning. Pyara, Puja and Ranjit had been asked to work with the brick laying machine. Meanwhile, a generator was put into service to operate the machine due to a sudden power cut. Pyara, who was putting the mould in the machine got in touch with flow of current and screamed loudly.
Ranjit and Puja also got the shock and became unconscious after being thrown out to a distance.
The co-workers switched off the generator and rushed the three to Jahangir Gandhi Hospital of Belpahar. Doctors declared Pyara dead on the arrival. The other two are undergoing treatment in the hospital.
Belpahar police registered a case in this connection and sent the body for post-mortem. Further investigation into the matter is on, police said.
