Police recover large cache of gold ornaments

Baripada: Local police arrested two chain snatchers and recovered a huge cache of gold ornaments from them Friday. A jeweler of the city was also arrested in this connection, a report said.

Miscreants from outside the district were active here for past couple of years. Taking advantage of the inaction of the police, criminals manage to flee to their hideouts after committing crimes.

However, Baripada police recovered 843 gm of gold ornaments from the snatchers who had created a havoc in Mayurbhanj district. The accused belong to Balasore, Superintendent of Police Parmar Smit Parshottamdas informed this at a press conference.

According to sources, two youths riding a bike had snatched a gold chain from a woman named Shakuntala Rout at Nagapal area under Udala police limits and managed to flee November 5.

Acting on a complaint, Udala police filed a case (173/19) and examined the CCTV footages. Of late, the police nabbed two youths under suspicion from Udala bus stand area who later admitted to their involvement in the snatching incident.

They included Rabindra Nayak of Gobinda village under Basta police limits and Dipak Jena of Kukundei village both in Balasore district. They sold the snatched ornaments to a jeweler named Dipak Rana of Singarpur village under Basta police limits.

Baripda police also seized a bike (OD11 M-7269) from the possession of the snatchers. There are two cases in Udala, four cases in Betanoti and four cases in Soro police stations against them, police said.

Similarly, they were also involved in five more cases registered against them in 2017. After informing the neighbouring police stations, Baripada police are probing to find out possible involvement of others.
