Bhubaneswar, March 8: A scenario of filth and unclean surroundings greets visitors to police stations across the city despite a cleanliness drive being launched by the Commission-erate Police recently.
Heaps of waste can be seen inside police stations even in posh areas. The parking lots resemble garbage dumps, complain visitors.
A visit to Sahid Nagar police station, which has under its limits one of the city’s most posh areas, paints a grim picture. Nayapalli police station, Kharvel Nagar police station, and Infocity police station too, are far from any semblance of cleanliness, with mounds of garbage inside their premises.
Heaps of disposable plates and seized vehicles covered in dust are just part of the litter that meets your eye at Sahid Nagar police station. A big garbage dump at the rear of the station adds to the ungainly surroundings.
“Police stations should set an example of cleanliness and efficiency. But the filth here sends a different message,” said Lakhmi Narayan Kar, a retired Central government employee living in Mancheswar police limits.
“The police stations here receive several visitors for verifications and hundreds of complainants daily, and they have to put up with this unhygienic ambience, which is totally unbecoming of a capital city,” said Satya Patra.
Expressing his helplessness, Bhubaneswar DCP Satyabrata Bhoi said, “We cannot just sell the vehicles we require the court’s permission to do so.”
“Generally, only after garbage piles up for days do the senior officers arrange for cleaning. There is no specific fund for the purpose and officers, at times, pay from their own pocket,” said a constable at Nayapalli police station preferring anonymity.
