Bhubaneswar: Members of the Assembly Thursday raised concern over poor supply of Oriya study material for Oriya language students of cutoff areas as well as outside the state and asked the state government to take adequate steps in this regard for promotion of Oriya language.
BJD member Debasish Nayak, Congress chief whip Taraprasad Bahinipati and several others expressed their concern in this regard. Raising the issue during question hour, Nayak said, “It is a matter of high importance for Oriyas residing outside the state whose children are pursuing education in Oriya language. The state government should take adequate steps in this regard.”
Taraprasad Bahinipati said, “There are cutoff and bordering areas near Koraput where the state government has failed to provide adequate study material and as a result the students are being imparted training in Telugu language. This is a serious issue which needs to be addressed.”
Likewise, member Sukanta Sahoo wanted to know what action the state government is taking for children of 10 lakh Oriyas residing in Surat and studying in nearby areas.
Replying to queries, school and mass education minister Debi Prasad Mishra said the state government supplies Oriya study materials to eight states including four neighboring states for Oriya language students. He said around 30 lakh books are circulated to these states. While the state government provides books to governments of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Delhi as per their requirement, Oriya study material is supplied to around 614 various schools in neighboring West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand.
