Post ‘donation’ of kidney, man has 2 organs

Kendrapara, Sept 3: Once again a wrong medical report case has come out in Kendrapara district. A person who donated a kidney to his younger brother underwent an ultrasound scan in a private laboratory and to his surprise the report said that he had two healthy kidneys.

He told them that he had donated one of his kidneys and raised doubts about the correctness of the report. Sources said Hemant Kumar Das, (69) a resident of Ghigidia village in Baro Gram panchayat of Kendrapara district went to Lifeline Diagnostic Centre on Medical Road Sunday to conduct an ultrasound with his son as he was feeling unwell for three days.

The ultrasonologist, Dr SP Mishra, (MD, O&G, Regd No: 3636), conducted the ultrasound scan on Das. Das was surprised to know from the ultrasound scan report that both his kidneys were healthy. The Parenchyma Echo pattern was also found to be normal and no focal solid or cystic lesion was seen.

He raised doubts about the correctness of the report and told the laboratory that they are playing with the lives of patients.

“How is it possible that I have two kidneys when I donated a kidney to my younger brother, Kumar Charan Das, October 29, 2015 at the Apollo Hospital in Bhubaneswar. My brother’s kidney transplantation was done legally as per the guidelines of the Director of Medical Education and Training and the Chairman of the Authorisation committee under the Transplantation of Human Organs & Tissues Act, 1994. I have the certificate and all other documents. I also have the surgery scar to prove the point,” added Das.

From my ultrasound report it is clear that the ultrasound diagnostic centre have been providing wrong reports to patients.

“I would approach the CDMO of Kendrapara and the Collector for action against the ultrasound centre” said Das.  It may be noted that one Balaram Patra, (33), a resident of Khasamunda was wrongly diagnosed as HIV positive by a clinic in Rajnagar some years back.

The public here says that many laboratories are operating illegally in Kendrapara district with the help of the health department officials.
