Paradip, Dec 4: A postmaster of Lock post office at Chaumuhani here allegedly embezzled over Rs one crore from the savings accounts of 50 depositors, a report said Thursday.
The matter came to light during an audit by senior officials at the post office Thursday. Later, the postmaster, Sisir Kumar Barik, fearing arrest fled with the passbooks. Barik was found to have embezzled money from the savings accounts of over 50 depositors. The incident triggered tension among depositors after reports about the fraud spread in the port town.
Postal overseer Basant Kumar Barik assured that depositors with valid documents would get their money back, but feigned ignorance about the postmaster’s escape.
