Prakash takes top honours

Bhubaneswar: Prakash Chandra Sahoo emerged champion of the Vth Umesh Chandra Mishra Memorial Open Chess Championships which concluded Tuesday at a city hotel here.

Prakash finished the campaign with 7.5 points from eight rounds. He remained unbeaten in the meet and registered seven wins and a draw.

Prabhat Kumar Ojha finished second with seven points while Pratyush Pradhan and S Sahoo were joint third with six points each.

Emphatic victories

Cuttack: Defending champions Sunrise Club and Sports Hostel registered contrasting wins over their respective opponents in their matches of the FAO Ist Division League football tournament at the Barabati Stadium here, Tuesday.

Sunrise Club spanked OGP 5-0. The reigning FAO League champions, looking for their fourth successive title, took the lead through Tophan Nayak in the second minute only. He then doubled the lead on 14 minutes.

Sonu Khadia then struck the third goal six minutes later and Sunrise Club went into the break leading 3-0. Sonu then got his second of the match, in the 62nd minute. Amiya Kisku finished off the rout three minutes later with a wonderful strike.

In the other match, Sports Hostel defeated Rovers Club 4-2 in a hard-fought encounter. Rovers Club took the lead nine minutes into the game when Ashok Kumar hit the target with a powerful shot. However, Francis Lakra restored parity for Sports Hostel 10 minutes later.

However, early into the second session, Sports Hostel struck twice in three minutes to establish their supremacy. Bhabagrahi Padhiary scored on 54 minutes before Bikash Chandra Padhiary score two minutes later.

Rover Club however pulled one back through Pintu Behera in the 63rd minute. But Bhabagrahi dashed Rovers Club hopes of a comeback with a 78th-minute strike, his second of the match to enable his club bag full points.
