‘Photo speaks a thousand words’. And perhaps this might be the reason behind curating photo albums by almost all households even a few years ago. These albums used to preserve memorable photos of diverse events ranging from family functions like marriage or birthday party to holidaying in exotic destinations. However, since the brutal invasion of internet culture, most of the people are seen dumping their photos in various social media or online accounts for public display; be it to friends or relatives. One thing good about this is that one does not need to be physically present or visit someone’s place to see photos, as it can be accessed right from internet at any place of choice, thanks to the magic of communication science and technology. Asking friends to check photos uploaded in social media sites like Facebook or twitter is something more than usual today. And in this arena, women outshine men, as sharing photos and getting feedbacks have become a part of their family life and also just a finger-touch away. Orissa Post caught up with such urban women to explore how it goes.

Smrutishree Satapathy is a software engineer residing in the Capital city and quite a tech-savvy. She prefers to store her photos in the internet. She said, “Keeping your photos in the internet saves your time as you can share them with your family and friends with just a click. Suppose you are applying for a job and need to send a photo along with your bio-data; the all you need to do is just browse and locate it in your computer and attach. Lest, you need to scan your printed photo and get a digital version of it. These days when my friends ask me to share photos I just ask them to check it in my Facebook account instead of visiting my place.”
“We should adapt blessings of the modern generation. When technology has equipped us to do things in a better way, why to get stuck in the traditional patterns? Earlier photos were kept in albums. Though some people still continue with the same practice, keeping photos in digital mode is no doubt better. Yes, of course there are issues related to electronic storage. Like a photo file can get corrupt and thus we may lose our memento. However, it is still better because you do not need to put much effort to preserve your photo in digital mode compared to the traditional one. A hard copy of the photo can be lost; can be spoiled by termites and also you need large space to store them, but you can store thousands of your photos in your system safely. I keep three copies of all my important photos – one in my Facebook account, one in my mail and one in my system. Thus, even if a photo file gets corrupt in one place, I can recover it from the other two sources,” said Madhu Jaiswal a post graduate student from Belpahad of Jharsuguda.
While the new generation prefers to opt for digital photos, some of the housewives still stuck with the old system of storing printed photos. “I know keeping photos in digital form is better. But then you need to know the mechanism yourself well to safely store your photos in the internet. Otherwise you are always in someone’s mercy to revisit your memories. That is the reason I always preserve my photos manually in albums. I sincerely take care of these photos, because I know I can’t get back the happy moments of my family functions once they are damaged or lost,” said Arati Mishra from Jeypore.
Though women have started adopting the new technology, professional and working women have their individual opinions in this context. Manorama Tripathy is a warden of a ladies’ hostel in the Capital city. She said, “Some working women have so much of workload that they can’t think of even devoting time in curating photos themselves, be it manually or in digital form. Earlier I used to store my photos in albums. But, after my daughter grew up she took up the charge. Being busy with my works I have almost become too reluctant to store photos and take pleasure of revisiting my older memories through them.”
