Malkangiri: Family members of a pregnant woman, who died due to a snakebite, allegedly thrashed a doctor of a district hospital, accusing him of medical negligence, officials said Wednesday.
Malkangiri Chief District Medical Officer Nihar Ranjan Prahraj denied the allegation, saying the patient was treated as per protocol.
The eight-month pregnant Vandana Mandal was taken to the hospital Tuesday night after a snake bite. There, the 28-year-old woman was administered an anti-venom injection, and she later left for home.
However, the woman’s condition worsened, and she was again brought to the hospital, where she died during treatment, officials said.
Angered over the death, her family members and villagers attacked the on-duty doctor, Sidharth Bhol, accusing him of discharging her from the hospital before she had been fully cured.
As tension mounted, police were called in. The villagers have demanded a high-level investigation into the incident and strict action against the culprits.
Prahraj said, We are sad over the death, but she was given proper treatment. An investigation will be conducted to find out how far the allegations of the deceased’s family are true, he said.
