Priansh emerges champion

Dhenkanal: Priansh Das of Jajpur emerged champion in the open category of the All Odisha U-9 chess Championship, which concluded here Sunday.

Priansh took the top honours with 6.5 points. His twin brother Sriansh Das also garnered the same number of points, but he had to be satisfied with the runner-up finish on the basis of tie-breaker. Shriyansh Dey of Cuttack secured the third position.

In the girls’ category Palak Mohapatra of Cuttack clinched the title with 6.5 points. Arushi Srichandan of Khurda secured the second position with six points. Anishka Pandey of the same town also got the same number of points, but she had to be satisfied with the third place finish on the basis of tie-breaker.

Emphatic victories

Club N Club and Sunrise Club scripted emphatic wins over their respective opponents in different matches of the FAO First Division League at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack, Sunday.

In the first match Club N Club thrashed YVCG 6-0. Umesh Bhue (fourth, 34th) and Premraj Pradhan (eighth, 31st) scored a brace each while Abinash Nayak (third) and Sameera Pradhan (68th) struck once each.

In the second match Sunrise Club rode on a hat-trick by Md. Fayaz (17th, 33rd, 74th) to beat Bidanasi Club 5-0. Janama Xess (fourth minute) and Gurpreet Singh (10th) found the back of the net once each.

Double crown

Sohini Mohanty won the singles and doubles title in the girls’ U-14 event of the Championship series (CS7) tennis tournament at Karnal, Haryana, Sunday.

In the singles final she defeated second seed Maitreyi Phogat of Chandigarh 6-2, 7-6 (7-5). In the doubles final she partnered with Divya Ungrish to beat Chandigarh pair of Tamanna Narwal and Maitreyi Phogat 6-4, 2-6, (10-8).

Special athletes feted

India visually impaired cricket team member Lingaraj Routray of Odisha was awarded the inaugural BRM-ASHA Geetanjali Sports Award for Sportspersons with Disabilities at the Open Learning System here, Sunday. Apart from Lingaraj, other visually impaired sportpersons Sarita Routray, Swarnali Pradhan (both athletics), Sasmita Mohapatra (coach), Prachuchya Pradhan and Soundarya Pradhan (both chess) and Purna Chandra Jena (cricket) were also awarded for their performances in the domestic and international circuit. Meanwhile, Orissa POST journalist Koushik Paul was also confered with the ‘Best Sports Reporter in English for Persons with Disabilities’ award.
