Cuttack: The additional district sessions judge has handed down life imprisonment to a prisoner after convicting him of the murder of an inmate at Choudwar Circle Jail in 2008.
Judge Anand Narayan Maharana also imposed a penalty of `10,000 on convict Pratap Kumar Khatei. The convict would serve additional jail terms of six months if he fails to pay the penalty amount, the court ruled.
Notably, Khatei, who was undergoing life imprisonment in connection with another case, had attacked fellow prisoner Krushna Chandra Behera with a spoon over some issues June 9, 2008. He had sharpened the spoon prior to the attack.
A critically-injured Behera was rushed to the SCB Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Choudwar police had filed a case in this regard and claimed that the murder was the fallout of a previous enmity between Khatei and Behera.
Police had filed a chargesheet against Khatei under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The additional sessions judge convicted Khatei after taking into account the statements of 19 witnesses and other circumstantial evidences submitted by the police.
