Private college girl’s suicide: Case lodged against hostel warden

Balasore: Four days after a girl studying in Plus II first-year science at Jhadeswar Residential Science College allegedly committed suicide at Suteibadagaon under Remuna block in Balasore district, the district police here registered a case against the college warden Chandrika, Thursday. The deceased student Samikhya Mohanty allegedly committed suicide in her hostel room, Sunday. Her body was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her hostel room 6 in the college, in the wee hours of Monday. While the college authorities have termed the girl’s death as suicide, family members cried foul alleging that she was forced to commit suicide due to mental pressure and torture by college authorities. The case was registered against warden Chandrika after senior police officials intervened over a complaint filed by Manoj Kumar Mohanty, uncle of the deceased. Family members have expressed their resentment over the case being registered against only the hostel warden while excluding the name of the college authorities and the hostel superintendent. They informed that they will meet the SP and plead with him to take action against all persons responsible for their daughter’s death.

Earlier, the Silpanchal police had only registered a case without taking any action after the post-mortem. The deceased girl’s uncle had filed a written complaint at the police station alleging that warden Chandrika of the ladies’ hostel, hostel superintendent, and college authorities had tortured and abused his niece. They also put on her unnecessary mental pressure due to which she was forced to end her life. IIC Salkhan Murmu neglected the complaint and had then assured the deceased’s uncle that they will take action after receiving the post-mortem report.

Expressing resentment, family members met the senior police officials and lodged a complaint. Apprised of the matter, IG (Eastern Range) Himanshu Lal had a discussion with SP Sagarika Nath. The SP directed the Sadar SDPO Sashank Sekhar Behera to especially probe the case following which a case was registered against the college hostel warden, Thursday
