Bhubaneswar: Nearly 150 students of Capital Law College Monday staged a demonstration against the institution’s authorities for not conducting the oath-taking ceremony of the candidates who have been declared elected to various posts, including that of students’ union president, following the polls in October.
The elections have been embroiled in controversy. The defeated candidates levelled allegations of forgery in the election process against the victorious candidates and also filed a petition in the Khurda civil court. The court then stayed the results of the election, leading to a delay in the oath-taking ceremony of the victorious candidates. Last month, the court ordered the college authorities to conduct the ceremony. However, this is yet to take place.
The delay in conducting the ceremony triggered unrest among students. “The court has already asked the college to conduct the ceremony. However, the college authorities have deliberately delayed it. Thus, we have protested,” said students’ union president Chinmaya Pradhan. The agitating students locked the room of the principal and also the main gate of the college. They burnt tyres on the National Highway 5, disrupting traffic for nearly an hour.
