Talcher, March 30: Coal extraction and transportation in ten Mahanadi Coalfield Limited (MCL) mines here in Angul district was completely paralysed Monday due to a 12-hour bandh observed by BJD workers protesting against MCL’s withdrawal from state’s Aahar scheme.
MCL had committed to sponsor the state scheme from its corporate social responsibility (CSR) fund but later backed out.
The company was to pay `3 crore for the scheme which aims to meal at the rate of `5 to the urban poor. The workers condemned MCL’s move and staged a stir.
Extraction and transportation of coal from the mines including Jagannath, Anant, Balaram, Hingula, Bhubaneswari, Lingaraj and Bharatpur were stopped. Reports said, MCL authorities has lost about `20 crore in one day for refusing just `3 crore for the scheme.
