Pyari Mohan, New Stewart emerge overall champions

Cuttack, April 9: New Stewart and Pyari Mohan Academy emerged champions in different categories of the Inter-School football tournament at the Pyari Mohan Academy Ground here Thursday.

In the senior category, New Stewart blanked Bhakta Madhu Vidyapitha 2-0 in the final to clinch the title. Meer Asif Ali demonstrated some excellent soccer skill to bag the man of the match award. In the junior segment, Pyari Mohan Academy thrashed Bhakta Madhu 4-0 to take the top honours. Apu Nayak was adjudged as the player of the match. Cuttack district education officer Niranjan Behera joined as the chief guests and distributed the prizes.

Gangpur advance

A dominant Hockey Gangpur spanked Assam 15-0 to enter the semifinals of the Vth Hockey India Junior Mens’ National Hockey Championship at Mysore in Karnataka, Thursday. Sanjay Xalxo (27th, 32th, 39th) scored a hat-trick, while Rasananda Khalkho (sixth, eighth), Abhishek Lakra (11th, 66th), Sudeep Kerketta (37th, 46th), Sibren Lakra (43rd, 48th) and Andand Ekka (52th, 54th) scored a brace each to help Gangpur score a facile victory. Sushil Ekka (fifth) and Arbin Kujur (21st) struck once each for the winning team.

Ravenshaw Collegiate win

Ravenshaw Collegiate School (RCS) registered a convincing nine wicket victory over Cambridge School to enter the quarterfinals of the PVR Murthy Inter-School cricket tournament at the Bhuvanananda School of Engineering Ground here Thursday.

Put into bat first, Cambridge batters could not tackle the fiery spell of Sai Prasad Acharya (5/15) and were bowled out for 81 in 24.4 overs. Ramachandra Rath (2/20) also supported Sai well. In reply, RCS made a mockery of the chase and cruised home in 13.3 overs losing only one wicket in the process. Punit Banerjee (82) emerged as the highest scorer. Sai bagged the man of the match award for his match winning five wicket haul.

Hand wrestling meet

State Hand Wrestling Association (SHWA) will play host of the State Hand Wrestling Championship in Cuttack, April 11-12. Participants from all the districts of the state under both male and female category will take part in the meet.
