Bhubaneswar: Statistics experts, professors, students and government officials gathered together at a city hotel Friday to pay tributes to the father of Indian statistics PC Mahalanobis and to celebrate the Statistics Day.
The experts including professor Jitendriya Sarangi, professor AKPC Swain and professor A Tripathy (ex-professor at IIM Ahmadabad). The speakers expressed their views on theme of ‘Quality Assurance in Official Statistics’ at the event.
Professor Sarangi lauded the government of India for selecting such a topic.
Jitendriya, who was the only person in the event who got a chance to see Mahalanobis, lauded the father of Indian statistics for his contribution to the nation and taking India abroad.
“Interestingly, Mahalanobis didn’t prefer government job but decided to correct the government in statistics sectors,” he said.
A Tripathy, while addressing the function said that quality data is necessary for quality statistics. He stressed the importance of transparency in collecting data.
“My life has been deeply impacted by the work of PC Mahalanobis. He was a multi talented personality. He was expert in various areas like statistics, economics and physics,” Tripathy added.
Speaking on the occasion Professor Swain said, “Students must study the subject and understand it’s applications in the field. They must consider that their job is calculated for the benefit of the society.”
A debate competition for degree students was also held on the occasion. As many as 17 participants shared their opinions on ‘Quality Assurance in Official Statistics.’
