Aristotle once said, “Exercise in repeatedly recalling a thing strengthens the memory.” That’s exactly how a quiz helps students to memorise their lessons easily. With the quizzing culture slowly but steadily catching up with school kids, some of them tell Orissa POST how it helps them score better in their academics.

Priyanshu Mohanty, a Class IX student of DAV Public school, Unit VIII,  says, “When we study, we go through textbooks, notes, or other resources for the answers, but when we take part in quiz programmes, we retrieve the information that was fed to our brain earlier. The discussion that goes on during the quiz programme offers you an opportunity to learn several aspects of a particular topic.”

“Ahead of Republic Day, we had a quiz competition in our school.  Although I could answer only a few questions, I got an opportunity to learn a lot of things. It helped me write a beautiful essay on Republic Day during my annual examination this year. This is one reason I would like to participate in quiz programmes. I have also overcome my fear of doing poorly in a quiz programme,” he adds.

Anshuman Debasis Mishra, a Class VIII student of Guru Nanak Public School, says, “For me, quiz is a game and I love to play it again and again. It’s a mind sport. I was in Class III when I started watching Kaun Banega Crorepati, a GK-based game show. It motivated me to take quizzing seriously. Making it to the finals is always a tough job in quizzes. I have ended up being among the last three in many competitions that I have participated in. It is difficult to express the feeling when you qualify for the finals and become the champion. Quizzing has also helped me do better in my studies. My mother usually asks me questions from textbooks in a quiz pattern and it helps me memorise things ahead of examinations. My score in school examinations improved when I followed this method. Now, I don’t find reading a textbook boring.”

Ritika Rayguru, a Class V student of Xavier International School, says, “I participate in quiz competitions to win glittering trophies and appreciation from teachers. It feels good when teachers appreciate your achievements before other classmates. It is a special feeling. My father loves quizzing and follows every TV programme based on GK. I imbibed this quality from him. Sometimes my mother gets irritated as I keep asking questions on almost everything. However, my father always encourages me and tries his best to answer my queries. I still remember when I won a quiz competition for the first time. Then I was in Class IV. My father was so happy that he ordered a big cake to celebrate my success. I want to become a quiz master in future.”

Priyanshu Biswal, a Class V student from Bhubaneswar, has won several quiz competitions. He says, “Going through quiz books allows me a few minutes of relaxation after my study hour. Whenever I get time, I like to spend it with my quiz book. I think every student should try it because it raises knowledge and confidence. We learn about topics which are not included in our textbooks. My mother sends me to several quiz competitions and buys me the latest quiz books to practice in my free time.”

“Quizzes help you know your limitations and offer an opportunity for a self-assessment. Apart from academics, we must know a lot of things about the world to get success in life. Quizzing is one of the best options to learn things. Be it inter-school quiz competitions or any other quiz programmes, I make it a point not to miss them,” he adds.
