Bhubaneswar/Phulbani: Two state-based activists Thursday moved National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) seeking compensation for the relatives of the eight-year-old girl who was crushed to death as an iron gate and cement wall of an abandoned primary school caved in at Belkati village under Raikia block of Kandhamal district March 10.
The activists, Himansu Sekhar Nayak and Pradipta Kumar Nayak, have also sought compensation for the two girls who have sustained severe injuries due to the mishap.
The activists urged the commission to direct Kandhamal district administration to enquire into the incident and order stringent action against the persons whose negligence led to the death of an innocent girl, Risika Pradhan, and critically injuring two others.
Nayak demanded `30 lakh for the family members of deceased minor and `5 lakh each to the critically injured children.
Nayak also urged the commission to direct the Principal Secretary of School and Mass Education department to take immediate steps to repair the poor infrastructure of all the schools throughout the state and submit a detailed report to the rights body.
According to sources, the three students including the deceased were playing at the playground of the abandoned school when the wall and the iron gate collapsed on them.
Local residents rescued and rushed them to a nearby government hospital where doctors pronounced Risika dead and administered treatment to two others. A pall of gloom descended on the village following the death of the minor girl.
