Bhubaneswar, April 10: Rakesh Kumar Nayak of Khurda and Vaibhav Mishra of Puri emerged joint leaders with 5.5 points each after the end of the sixth round of the 56th Orissa State Senior Fide Rating Chess Championship in Puri, Friday. Rakesh outwitted Manoj Kumar Panigrahi, while Vaibhav checkmated Sumit Kumar Banerjee.

Seven players are in the joint second spot with five points in their kitty. They are Ashirwad Swain, Nilsu Patnaik, Soundarya Kumar Pradhan, Soumya Ranjan Mishra, Johnson Sahoo, Ansuman Samal and Sradhanjali Jena.

 

Semifinalists spotted

 

Top seed Ansu Bhuyan lived up to his billing and made merry against Kumar Anurag Saran to enter the semifinals of the Orissa Tour Finals Masters tennis tournament in Puri, Friday. Ansu thrashed Kumar 6-2, 6-0.

 

Adarsh Sahoo, Ajay Nishank and Santosh Mallick also made it to the last four. Adarsh got the better of Avilash Mishra 6-4, 6-1, Ajay overcame Asutosh Das 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) and Santosh Mallick prevailed over Manoj Nayak 6-2, 6-1.

 

In men’s doubles event, second seeds Ajay Nishank and Satirtha Patnaik defeated the sixth-seeded pair of Jayesh Mangela and Kumar Anurag Saran 6-3, 6-4 to advance into the semifinals.

 

Training camp

Orissa State Sepak Takraw Association (OSSTA) will organise a sub-junior training camp at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack starting April 15. “The summer camp will be organised to attract youngsters to the game and train them properly. All the sessions will take place during the morning hours,” stated OSSTA secretary Sahadev Rout through a press release Thursday.

Arm wrestling meet

The state Arm Wrestling Association (SAWA) will conduct a state meet at Cuttack, April 11-12. Both male and female contestants will take part in the event.

TT Summer camp

Young Generation Table Tennis Association(YGTTA) with the active cooperation of Orissa State Table Association(OSTA) will organise a summer coaching camp at the Sachin Tendulkar Indoor Hall, Barabati Stadium in Cuttack starting April 14. “National coach Raj S Subramaniam will train the players about the finer points of the game,” stated YGTTA through a press release Friday.

Ten selected

Ten players from Angul have been selected to take part in the IIIrd State Level Taekwondo Championships at Bhubaneswar, April 12-13. They are Monalisha Lenka, Jasline Sahoo, Khusi Roy, Sushree Subhasmita, Nandini Behera, Mrutunjay Swain, Soumya Ranjan Lenka, Swayan Pradhan, Rashmijit Das and Shakti Prasad Mohanty.
