Bhubaneswar, Oct 3: While Dussehra, the festival of Durga, is round the corner, the city is agog with activities preparing huge idols installed on pandals built upon scaffolds at vantage points of the city.

Several Durga Puja committees made their best bid to beautify their pandals. To stand out among others, the Rasulgarh committee has created a marquee made of mirrors, bangles and glass bottles.

The committee has been making efforts to create unique marquees over the years. In the last year’s puja, they prepared a 80-ft high and 120-ft wide wooden pandal which was modeled upon a shrine of Shiva. The year before, they had built an exclusive pandal out of stainless steel.

“In the current year, we are using garbage to construct the rostrum,” said Kailash Rout, the marketing head of the puja committee.

Chief artisan Bidyut, who has been preparing pandals and idols for the past 24 years, has planned to use material like glasses, bangles, and mirrors this time, Rout added.
As many as artisans from Bengal were engaged by the committee a month ago. On the security front, the puja committee said it would deploy 100 volunteers and 30 private security guards in and around the pandal. “We have also sought support from the

Commissionerate Police who have also assured help,” Rout indicated.
The committee said they have spent Rs35 lakh on the pandal. “Parking was an issue in last year’s Durga Puja celebration at Rasulgarh because of the flyover construction work. Now that it is over, we may not face trouble,” Rout said.
