Cuttack: An undergraduate student of Ravenshaw University died when a speeding truck hit her scooter at College Square here, Thursday.
Venting their anger over the incident, hundreds of students of the university staged a road blockade at the spot.
According to sources, Annapurna Choudhury, 20, daughter of Ramesh Choudhury of Thakursahi area in Jagatpur, was on her way to the university for Teachers’ Day celebrations in the afternoon.
A speeding truck coming from Pilgrim Road ran over Annapurna after hitting her scooter. Annapurna, a third year Economics honours student, died on the spot.
On being informed, Malgodown police reached the spot and sent the body to SCB Medical College and Hospital for post mortem.
Soon, hundreds of students gathered at the spot and held a road blockade. The students claimed that many heavy vehicles are plying on the city roads in daytime in violation of the existing guidelines.
“As per the guidelines, no heavy vehicle can ply on city roads after 6 am. But, the traffic police deployed at College Square did not stop the speeding truck. Besides, the traffic authorities have failed to introduce concrete steps to prevent mishaps near Ravenshaw University,” said a student.
Ravenshaw University Vice Chancellor Ishan Kumar Patro, Zone-1 assistant commissioner of police Manas Ranjan Gadanayak and Malgodown police in-charge Rabindra Narayan Bhanja reached the spot and held discussions with the agitators.
The students called off their agitation after the ACP assured them to introduce steps for checking mishaps at College Square.
