Cuttack: A second year student of Information Technology Management (ITM) at Ravenshaw University here was found hanging at a private hostel at Mathasahi near Station Bazaar Wednesday.
Deceased Somnath Palauri was a native of Bauria in Kakatpur police limits of Puri district. Police recovered a suicide note from the spot.
The victim’s parents, on the other hand, alleged it was a planned murder and demanded a high-level probe into the case.
Sources said Somnath stayed back at hostel while his other friends went to attend their classes. Later, some locals spotted his body hanging from the ceiling fan of his room and informed the police about the incident.
Before the arrival of police, Somnath’s friends took him to a hospital where he was declared dead.
Source said Somnath left a suicide note addressing his parents.
“I am sorry father and mother for the extreme step. Please pardon me. Although I had not cleared the second semester papers, I could not inform you. Friends, please don’t find fault with me,” inspector-in-charge Debi Prasanna Patra said quoting the suicide note.
Somnath also mentioned a girl in his suicide note. He had also chatted with the girl through his whatsapp messenger, police said.
“We suspect the boy was in love with the girl and that could be another reason for his drastic step,” police said. A case of unnatural death has been registered in this regard and Somnath’s friends are being questioned, police said adding, further investigation is on.
“If necessary, we will send the suicide note to forensic lab in Bhubaneswar to verify the authenticity of the notes,” Patra added.
Somnath’s friends, however, said he was mentally depressed for a couple of days. He was a meritorious student. His friends initially did not believe that he might have committed suicide and demanded a high-level probe into the matter.
