RBI to launch new Rs 20 banknotes soon

Bhubaneswar: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) says it will soon issue new Rs 20 currency notes. The new greenish-yellow Rs 20 notes will be a continuation of the Mahatma Gandhi series.

According to a RBI press release, the new currency notes will bear a motif of Ellora Caves on the reverse, portraying the rich cultural heritage of India. Aside from a portrait of Mahatma Gandhi at the centre of the note, it will also have the denominational numeral 20 written in Devnagari script.

Aside from the greenish-yellow base colour, the new note will have various “other designs, geometric patterns aligning with the overall colour scheme, both at the obverse and reverse”.

The press release clarified that the previous Rs 20 currency notes issued by the RBI will continue to be legal tender even after the issuance of the new banknotes.

The new banknotes will also have the Ashoka Pillar emblem, Mahatma Gandhi’s portrait and electrotype (20) watermarks, a number panel with numerals growing from small to big on the top left side..

On the reverse, the notes will carry the year of printing, the Swachh Bharat logo with the slogan, the customary language panel, and a motif of the Ellora caves.
