Residents face water woes

Tihidi, Feb 24: Summer has made its presence felt early with the mercury touching 36 degree Celsius in some parts. Water scarcity now steadily grips in many areas, including Bahabalpur, with the plunging water table. Plummeting water table has rendered many tube wells and other water projects useless for the locals in Thidi block of Bhadrak.
Source said eight tube wells have been lying defunct with the authorities concerned not taking any step to repair them.
Another problem is breakages in pipelines at many places, due to which water is not reaching the users. Locals blamed the problem on the authorities concerned. The water project at Bahabalpur has been lying defunct since August last, but the rural water supply and sanitation department has not yet repaired it, even though the local sarpanch has frequently drawn the attention of the department.
Same is the problem in Maharmpur panchayat. The water supply pYroject is in disuse because the electricity supply has got disrupted due to burning of the transformer.
Another project in the panchayat has been partially working, failing to meet the need of
the people.
Besides, water pipe lines at Tihidi, Nandapur and Haripur were broken at many places. Breakages have only led to unnecessary wastage of water.
Junior engineer of the RWSS department Khagendra Prasad Behera said that pipe
repair could not be done due to vacancies.
