Baripada:  A herd of elephant went on a rampage in Andharjhari village of Mayurbhanj district Tuesday night damaging houses of six families, locals said.

There has been no loss of life in the incident. However, damages to the houses and standing corn and paddy crops are extensive.

According to the residents of Andharjhari, the incident has led to panic among the villagers.

Panic apart, there is huge discontentment among villagers over the issue that they say is recurring. The anger manifested Wednesday morning as angry locals blocked Keonjhar-Karanjia road by placing burning tyres on the road demanding administrative intervention to solve this issue. Besides, they also sought compensation for the victims.

Vehicular movement on the road came to a grinding halt owing to the protest.

“The herd here has been camping in the area for more than a month now. Even though we have brought this to the attention of the administration, no action has been taken as of now,” said a villager.

The protest, however, was withdrawn after the district administration got involved and assured to work towards avoiding such incidents in the future.
