Cuttack: A resilient all-round batting show by Orissa, led by young wicketkeeper-batsman Rajesh Dhuper (97,225b, 12×4, 2×6), who hit his career-best score helped the hosts snatch a crucial first-innings lead against Tamil Nadu at the DRIEMS Ground in Tangi here Sunday.
Having to overhaul Tamil Nadu’s first innings total of 530, the hosts did so with only one wicket in hand. Dhuper came in at 310 for five after senior all-rounder Biplab Samantray (50, 137b, 4×4) was stumped off Vijay Shankar. He hung on for more than five hours and rallied the lower order before he was the ninth batsman to be dismissed with the hosts still five runs behind. Basant Mohanty (18 n o, 23b) and Dhiraj Singh (2, 6b), however, held their nerves to give Orissa three points.
Resuming on 286 for four, the hosts lost Biplab in the 16th over of the day, before Shantanu Mishra (71, 232b, 10×4) and Dhuper added 42 for the sixth wicket. Dhuper then added fifty stands with Alok Sahoo (36, 66b, 4×4, 2×6), Suryakant Pradhan (43, 39b, 4×4, 2×6) and Basant to haul the side past 500. Washington Sundar (4/95) and Yo Mahesh (3/60) were the most successful bowlers for the visitors.
