Bhadrak: A day after the sensational rape and murder incident at Talasitha village under Dhamnagar police limits in Bhadrak, the district police Tuesday recovered the body of Rabindra Behuria, husband of the deceased and father of the victim girl, from a culvert adjacent to NH-26 near Maa Kalitri temple here.
Based on the statement of the prime accused, Gopinath Mohanty, police searched the place and recovered the body Tuesday morning. Mohanty was arrested Monday near a petrol pump at Chandrasekharpur in Bhubaneswar.
Gopinath Tuesday revealed that he had killed Rabindra and his wife Bhaktilata in order to seek revenge as they had physically tortured his parents in the past.
“When I was a kid, the husband-wife duo used to torture me and my parents physically. I wanted to kill them to seek revenge. I initially killed Rabindra and then murdered his wife Bhaktilata. I had also planned to kill their daughter but failed to do so as one of their kin reached the spot and I fled,” Mohanty told reporters.
“In the past, I had attempted to kill them but could not succeed. This time, I offered liquor to Rabindra and he consumed it. Following this I tied his limbs and pushed him from the culvert. After Rabindra died, I headed to his house and committed the crime,” he said.
Gold and silver ornaments and money were seized from Mohanty’s possession which he had looted from Rabindra’s house, a police official said. Gopinath tried to kill Rabindra’s minor daughter in a bid to eliminate evidence as she had witnessed her mother’s murder, police said. Bhadrak SP Monday said the accused had raped the minor girl before trying to eliminate her.
The accused told police that he intended to loot Rs 2 lakh from Rabindra’s house which the latter had withdrawn from bank.
According to reports, Gopinath initially murdered Rabindra at Barikpur on the fateful night and hid the body under the culvert. He then went to the deceased’s house and attacked his wife with a grinding stone leading to her death on the spot. He then raped Gopinath’s daughter when she opposed the act.
Meanwhile, the probe by the police pointed out another aspect of the murder. The couple has two daughters and a son. Their son works in Surat. His elder daughter Mama was married into a family at Daipur. Two year ago, her in-laws had killed her for dowry. Mama has a five-year-old daughter who stays at Rabindra’s house. Mama’s husband was in jail after her murder, but later came out on bail.
However, both the families wanted a compromise. Mama’s father-in-law had paid Rs 3 lakh to Rabindra for maintenance of Mama’s daughter. “Gopinath might have killed the couple to take away this money,” Superintendent of Police B Gangadhar told media.
